Meet Emma, an Ottawa mom and caregiver to her son Liam, who lives with neurodevelopmental exceptionality. Liam is a nine-year old boy who is bursting with curiosity and often bursts into an infectious laugh.
Recently, Emma and Liam were introduced to CHEO’s groundbreaking new program called Extensive Needs. Launched in 2023, this program has one goal in mind: provide comprehensive support to children with complex needs, especially those who may have been previously excluded from care.
As a caregiver, Emma was thrilled to learn about this new support for her and Liam. With tailored assistance for children with complex conditions, this program provides Emma – and many other caregivers – with that extra support she needed.
The first meeting at CHEO was a revelation for Emma. She met with a team of experts, including nurses, therapists, and support staff, all dedicated to improving Liam's quality of life. Together, they developed a personalized care plan for Liam's needs and challenges.
The Extensive Needs Program not only provides medical care but also offers valuable resources. Workshops on effective communication strategies, coping mechanisms and access to support groups can act as a lifeline for any devoted caregiver. For Emma, this was the first time she felt understood, supported and equipped for those challenging days.
Already, the results are impressive. With the guidance of CHEO's experts, Emma implemented sensory integration techniques that helped Liam regulate his emotions and navigate the world around him. Speech therapy sessions tailored to Liam's communication style fostered a deeper connection between him and Emma. And the support extended beyond the hospital walls. Emma and Liam attended community events organized by CHEO, where they met other families facing similar challenges. These gatherings became a source of strength, camaraderie, and shared experiences.
"The Extended Needs Program has transformed our lives, says Emma. I now have tools, knowledge and even coaching to enable me to be the best caregiver I can be."
