The Extensive Needs Service (ENS) program at CHEO continues to meet the evolving needs of patients, working to transform challenging medical experiences.
Through ENS, individualized and vital wrap-around support has been provided to more than1,400 children and their families. The program is run by three children’s hospitals in Ontario: CHEO, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and McMaster Children’s Hospital.
That support was essential for Kennedy McVey, who has Prader–Willi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that leads to low muscle tone, behavioural and mental health challenges, and learning difficulties.
The 15-year-old had to have spinal surgery at CHEO in October 2024 to address severe scoliosis.
The preparation, and the surgery itself, were challenging, but her family praised CHEO’s interdisciplinary care team, including the emotional and logistical support.
When she arrived at the hospital the morning of the surgery, Kennedy was given a Safety Pod, a bean bag-like chair, and some of her favourite games, Connect Four and Candyland, said her father, Andrew.
“She can be aggressive, and she can get upset, and we didn't see any of that,” he said.
“She was surrounded by comfort things. That took the anxiety away.”
Andrew said the medical staff was patient and worked to understand her anxiety, taking their time and adjusting how they provided sedation. She also “became instant friends” with behaviour therapist Courtney.
The surgery was a success. Kennedy is once again attending CHEO’s board game club, goes horse-back riding, and she continues to cheer on her younger brother during his hockey games.
Launched in April 2023, ENS provides care that addresses unique and complex health-care needs, including developmental, behavioural, and mental health. It is designed to reduce barriers that families can face navigating a complex health-care system, and provides access to individualized, evidence-based and trauma-informed treatment for some of the most vulnerable children in Ontario.
