Trauma simulation puts CHEO Emergency Department to the test

November 22, 2018 — Ottawa, ON — Today CHEO is running a simulation in our Emergency Department to give Trauma Team staff the opportunity to practice and be prepared for something that doesn’t happen very often. The simulations are as realistic as possible to provide our staff and students with the best possible teaching opportunity, including today’s participation of the Ottawa Paramedic Service.

Our Emergency Department runs simulations five to seven times a month to practice a range of situations — from simple cases for students to complex scenarios involving staff from across the hospital. These allow us to practice, learn from the successes and challenges, and ensure that we’re offering the best patient care possible.

“Simulation is an important part of working and training here at CHEO — it gives our staff the opportunity to test their skills and knowledge in a simulated situation in order to prepare for these uncommon but critical events” says Dr. Gina Neto, Chief of Emergency Medicine. “Our medical professionals come together to hone crucial skills in a safe and collaborative environment."

At the time of the simulation, all families in our Emergency Department will be notified about the simulation. They will also be assured that the Emergency Department will continue to operate normally and that patient care will not be affected.

“This is a great opportunity to prepare and learn together, as a team and with our paramedic partners,” says Ann Lynch, CHEO’s Vice-president of Acute Care and Chief Nursing Executive. “As an organization for which safety is a top priority, simulations like today’s are critical.”
