Meet Sam!
Waiting for an appointment can be boring – luckily CHEO has volunteers like Sam to swoop in and bring some fun and play to kids across CHEO.
Sam is a CHEO volunteer with our Heart Cart program – bringing craft kids, books, and activities to everyone in our waiting rooms – kids waiting for appointments and their siblings too! Sam joined CHEO as a volunteer with our Play program – and when COVID took over, Sam was one of the volunteers who stepped up to help bring some fun back into the building. Even behind her mask, you know Sam is always smiling. We asked Sam some questions so that you can get to know the volunteer behind the vest.
Sam – you have been such a dedicated volunteer throughout the pandemic – sometimes picking up a couple shifts a week, taking the Heart Cart out to all our waiting areas. We know that these small moments with kids and their families have a big impact on their experience at CHEO – making it less scary or boring. You’re making a difference! Tell us about someone who has made a difference in your life.
Sam: My dance teacher from my high school years has really made an influence on my life in many ways. I look up to her in so many different areas of my life and I have truly been inspired by the presence of her in my life. I am very thankful.
Volunteers really help make CHEO the special place it is. Friendly faces in purple vests, making the experience better for families and kids. We know you have had many experiences with CHEO growing up in Ottawa. Do you have any memories of volunteers that made a difference in your life?
Sam: There are so many volunteers that I have come into contact with at CHEO that I will always remember so I can't just choose one. All volunteers are always positive bright and happy I will always remember CHEO volunteers for being bubbly and positive.
How would you like CHEO kids and families to remember you?
Sam: I would like to be remembered for always approaching CHEO kids and families with a bright smile on my face and a positive outlook on life. Always ready and willing to provide small bags of fun to make their lives brighter.
Sam – do you have any stories to share about your experiences with the Heart Cart?
Sam: I was coming out of the elevator heading to Diagnostics when a mother came running up to me very excited. She asked me what the Heart Cart was about and I explained the role behind the Heart Cart. I then gave her many books and activities for her children. After our meeting, she was very happy and as she walked away proceeded to yell "I'm very happy thank you!" I will always remember this mother.
Okay Sam – last question – if you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Sam: Upbeat, Strong-Willed, Brave.
We agree.
Thanks Sam, and all CHEO volunteers pitching in to bring some bright moments of fun and play to CHEO throughout the pandemic.
