Peter Roberts arrives at the Smyth Road campus of CHEO committed to keeping everyone safe, and he’s rarely felt such a sense of pride in a construction project.
Roberts, superintendent of operations at EllisDon, oversees a 26-member team that’s building the new parking garage at CHEO. Once complete, the team will then start on 1Door4Care, CHEO’s new integrated treatment centre.
Roberts is responsible for ensuring the safety of workers and the public on and around the work site, and he specifically asked to be part of this major expansion project at CHEO.
Roberts has five children, including four who are seven and younger. His five-year-old Henry has a heart issue called abicuspid aortic valve defect, which is improving but has required careful care at CHEO, including many appointments.
His seven-year-old Blake has also received extensive treatment at CHEO for his asthma. Roberts estimates the family makes about 10 trips per year to the hospital.
“Every time we go to CHEO, we're treated with respect. The care is fantastic. What you do for my children is fantastic,” said Roberts.
He recognizes the value of a parking garage because he’s been through the challenge of finding hospital parking. When it comes to the integrated treatment centre, Roberts said that the building will “bring a whole different level of feelings.”
“The nature of that building is to provide a whole lot of different kinds of care. ... That is so needed. And that building is going to be so incredible once it comes online for so many different people and families,” he said.
"To be able to be a part of that build is going to be incredible ... that one's going to be a real sense of pride for myself once it's completed, and a feather in my cap.”
The parking garage is expected to be completed in 2025and construction on 1Door4Care should begin soon after.
