Meet Dr. Maude Lambert, Clinical Neuropsychologist with CHEO’s Development and Rehabilitation Department.
Dr. Maude Lambert comes from a small rural town in Quebec. Growing up in a unilingual French-speaking town, Dr. Lambert didn’t learn English until her 20s – yet today, she provides high quality care to patients in both English and French, something she is deeply passionate about.
Committed to learning English, Dr. Lambert left her small French community to begin her university education in a language she did not speak. “While I questioned my decision many times at the beginning, I stayed true to my personal aspirations and my commitment to completing graduate school in English. I now know that all my hard work was worth it. I can do the work I love in Canada’s two official languages within the walls of a very unique environment – CHEO.”
In 2018, Dr. Lambert did her first placement in Oncology Neuropsychology at CHEO. During all her placements at CHEO, she felt nothing but support, respect, and a feeling of being at home. She knew that after completing her residency in Toronto, she wanted to work in a bilingual environment – offering care to patients and families in the language of their choosing.
“Officially joining CHEO in 2022 was an easy yes for me. Ottawa is a very unique bilingual environment – and CHEO is no different. I am constantly switching from one language to the other! Not only does it make CHEO even more stimulating and dynamic, but it also makes it more inclusive and responsive to diversity. This matters to me and to many of our patients and families that are looking for care in their preferred language,” explains Dr. Lambert. “Many times, when patients and families come to CHEO, they are going through a challenging, possibly traumatic, experience. For many families, it’s a relief to be served in the language of their choosing – it’s one less barrier they have to face.”
In March 2023, CHEO received the French services health provider designation under the Province of Ontario French Language Services Act. CHEO’s commitment to serving patients bilingually, and the staff, medical staff, and learners that make it happen, is a part of its unique offering. For Dr. Maude Lambert, working at CHEO means doing what she loves – it's a series of endless opportunities and collaboration. “CHEO is a community that works together to provide exceptional family-centered care. We thrive to make families feel valued and heard, regardless of their background and native language. That’s what makes this place so special,” shares Dr. Lambert.
