Who we are looking for
CHEO’s Department of Pediatrics, which is part of the University of Ottawa, is recruiting interested patients and families who want to help with teaching our most senior residents.
What is a resident?
A resident is a pediatrician-in-training who has finished medical school. Residents complete four more years of training to become pediatricians. At the end of residency, senior residents do an exam to qualify them to become full pediatricians. We are recruiting volunteer patients to help with this exam.
What is involved in the exam?
You and your child will need to be at CHEO for one hour. During that time, the resident will take your medical history, asking many of the same questions you are frequently asked when you come to CHEO. We will need you to treat the resident like they are a pediatrician becoming involved in your child’s care. Don’t be nervous – we are testing the resident, not you!
The resident will then examine your child (e.g., listen to your child’s heart with a stethoscope, test your child’s reflexes, etc.) The examination will not be painful, and the resident will make sure your child is comfortable.
The exam will be supervised by two staff pediatricians that are evaluating the resident. They will not speak or ask questions.
How do I sign up to participate?
If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please contact Lisa Lagasse (llagasse@cheo.on.ca or 613-868-8396) to provide your child’s name, date of birth and a phone number where we can reach you.
A coordinator will call you to see if you are available on the testing dates, or to see if there are any times you would naturally be coming to CHEO for an appointment. If you have an appointment in the next couple of months, we would do our best to have you participate either before or after your appointment, whenever works best for you.
We promise you will not be called upon more than twice a year for these exams.
NOTE: Agreeing or not agreeing to participate will not influence the care that you receive at CHEO or Roger Neilson House
As a thank you for your time, payment for parking and a small token of our appreciation ($25 Amazon gift card) will be offered to you at the time of the exam.
