On April 8, a solar eclipse will cross North America, including Ottawa. Plan ahead and take safety precautions if you plan to watch this exciting phenomenon.
What is a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse is when the moon blocks any part of the sun from our view. During a solar eclipse, the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow on our planet and causing the sun to appear partially or entirely covered.
The eclipse we’ll see in Ottawa on April 8 is unique because it will be visible in so many regions — from Canada to Mexico!
Staying safe during the solar eclipse
CHEO experts are unanimous: it is never safe to look directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection, and the solar eclipse is no different. Looking directly at the sun before, during, or after the eclipse can cause permanent vision loss.
Here are tips to help you and your family safely watch the eclipse in-person:
- Always use certified solar viewing glasses or indirect viewing methods like pinhole projectors to watch the eclipse safely.
- Talk with your child or youth ahead of time about how to stay safe and explain why they need to keep their solar viewing glasses on or look through a pinhole projector at all times.
- Parents or caregivers should supervise their child or youth at all times while viewing the solar eclipse.
