May 8, 2024 – After extensive consultation with more than 1,600 staff, medical staff, learners, volunteers, children, youth, families and community partners, the CHEO Board of Directors has adopted CHEO’s 2024-29 Strategy — a roadmap to guide our work over the next five years.
Our destination is ambitious but simple: by 2029 it will be easier and quicker to access safe, inclusive and leading-edge care at CHEO and in our community thanks to strengthened teams and partnerships. The excellent care we provide will be fueled by the research, innovation and improvement that we all do. All of this and more will be accomplished in newly redeveloped spaces that are being designed and built in the years ahead to meet the needs of the children and youth that we serve, our growing team and community.
As we work to reach this destination, seven principles will guide us:
- You matter – At CHEO, we are here to support the care and life goals that matter most to you, your parents/caregivers and family.
- We make it easier to get what you need – We work hard to help you access care, tools and resources to meet your needs in tandem with our many partners.
- We use evidence to inform everything we do – Every day and everything we do is informed by evidence and new knowledge as we constantly look to improve and reach better outcomes.
- We work with you, for you – We know and value the importance of lived experience and work hard to engage with you and all others we care for to learn from you.
- We work as a team – We believe in the power of bringing broad expertise and skill sets together to provide the best possible care. We foster a strong learning environment where everyone can thrive and build a life-friendly career.
- We partner and influence to benefit everyone – We leverage our knowledge and expertise to build capacity for excellent pediatric care across all communities we serve and beyond.
- We create a healthier planet — We are committed to a climate-friendly, sustainable health system so your generation and future generations of children and youth in our care can live their best lives.
CHEO’s 2024-29 Strategy features five key areas where we will focus our growth in the years ahead:
- Excellent care — We are the trusted leader in excellent, safe and compassionate pediatric care and expertise and always strive to know, do and be even better.
- Everyone belongs — We respond to every unique need, going above and beyond to ensure safe and supportive spaces for Indigenous and diverse communities.
- Strong team — We branch out to attract, support and teach the very best people and empower everyone at CHEO to make big, bold and meaningful contributions.
- Bright future — We all develop and leverage clinical expertise, research and innovation to create a stronger, healthier tomorrow – for kids here and around the world.
- Connected care — We work, educate, collaborate and advocate with others to grow capacity, build expertise and bring care closer to home.
This ambitious plan will help guide and prioritize CHEO’s work to reach the same destination: the best life for every child and youth.
“This roadmap paves the way as we work to serve hundreds of thousands of families each year. For over 12 months the CHEO Board has been actively involved in the process to shape this ambitious plan, and we’re very excited for the next five years. We adopted the strategy unanimously,” said Jo-Anne Poirier, Chair of the CHEO Board of Directors.
“As we look back on and celebrate half a century of dedicated care, compassion and commitment to the health and well-being of children, this new roadmap tells the story of what comes next for CHEO and our community. This strategy addresses how the world has changed and focuses on how we will help children and families where they are, and when they need it the most,” says Alex Munter, President and CEO of CHEO.
CHEO’s strategy is updated every five years to reflect changing priorities and needs.
