CHEO, the leading provider of specialized pediatric health services in the region, is currently recruiting volunteers to join its Board of Directors and Board Standing Committees. CHEO’s Board of Directors is responsible for the overall governance of the organization - its members set the organization’s strategic priorities and ensure they’re met; they provide ongoing oversight of the quality of care provided; and ensure financial resources are managed appropriately.
Vacancy - Board of Directors
CHEO is seeking to fill two vacancies on its Board of Directors. CHEO’s Board consists of 18 Directors – 12 members recruited from the broader community; 1 representative from the University of Ottawa; the Chair of the Board of the School Authority; and 4 ex-officio members. Approximately 20% of CHEO’s Board Directors are Francophones (speak French as their mother tongue).
Competencies provide the foundation for CHEO’s Board composition. CHEO’s Board of Directors is also firmly committed to diversity, striving to ensure it is representative of the communities we serve. We strongly encourage applicants from all backgrounds. Ideal candidates will have a passion for CHEO’s mission to serve the children, youth and families of our community. Candidates will also have a good knowledge of the health care environment and public policy, as well as familiarity with child and youth issues, and/or have already played active leadership roles in their community. Previous governance experience is preferred.
For this recruitment, we are seeking applicants with expertise in any of the following areas:
- Programs/services related to accessibility & persons with disabilities
- Research
- Education sector
- Capital project expertise
Applicants without experience in one of these areas will not be considered for this particular recruitment.
Candidates must be available to attend 6-7 Board meetings per year, in addition to serving on at least one Board committee which also meets 6-7 times per year. Members must also be able to dedicate several hours a month to read required documentation and attend other functions, as needed. They
should be willing to represent CHEO in the community and with decision makers, in order to help achieve the organization’s long-term goals. Mandates are for three years, renewable twice.
Vacancies – CHEO Board standing committees
CHEO’s Board of Directors has four standing committees: Audit and Finance Committee, Quality and Safety Committee, Strategy and Connected Care Committee and Governance Committee.
Board committees are chaired by a Board Director and include several representatives from the Board itself. These Committees also includes community member representatives. Community members are full voting members of the Committee, providing their input and feedback on all business presented to the Committee. This provides an additional opportunity to enhance the voice of the community within our governance structure. Community members are not members of the Board of Directors.
At this time, we have community member vacancies on the Strategy and Connected Care Committee and Quality and Safety Committee.
In particular, we are seeking individuals with the following competencies and experiences to join as community members:
- Community engagement/strategic planning
- Quality and patient safety
Candidates must be available to attend 6-7 Committee meetings per year, in addition to dedicating a few hours each month to read required documentation. Community member mandates are for one year, renewable up to 6 years.
Application Process
If you are interested in joining CHEO’s Board or one of the Board committees, please send your application by e-mail to CHEO’s Governance Coordinator, Shannon Watson, at swatson@cheo.on.ca by June 28, 2023.
Applicants should identify for which role they are applying (e.g., Board vacancy or committee vacancy), and should include a detailed letter of interest and a resume outlining relevant experience, qualifications and any other information you would like to highlight to the selection committee. If you have previous governance experience, please include information regarding that role [e.g., name of organization and year(s) served].
As noted, CHEO is committed to diversity, striving to ensure our governance structures are representative of the demographic, ethno-cultural, linguistic and geographic characteristics of the communities we serve. In your application, we encourage you to highlight your lived experience and the diverse perspective you could bring to the Board.
