The new CHEO Integrated Treatment Centre is one step closer to reality as construction begins.
Construction of the new, fully accessible and state-of-the-art treatment centre began with a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The centre will provide integrated and coordinated care under one roof to better serve children and youth living with complex medical, developmental, behavioural, and mental health needs.
“Today’s groundbreaking is another step in our commitment to protecting Ontario’s provincial health care by improving services for children and youth with developmental disabilities,” said Michael Parsa, Ontario Minister of Children, Community and Social Services.
The new, state-of-the-art centre will consolidate services and programs across eight locations under one roof and, once completed, it will better serve thousands of kids and their families. The centre will be connected to the main hospital building on Smyth Road in Ottawa, allowing for more convenient and connected care for children and their families.
"CHEO’s Integrated Treatment Centre is a key piece in our transformation to better meet the needs of children and youth," said Dr. Vera Etches, President and CEO, CHEO.
"This initiative will lead to better care integration and enhance the experience for children and youth dealing with complex medical, developmental, behavioural and mental health needs."
CHEO reached this point thanks to families, youth, staff and medical staff who collaborated and provided feedback to improve the proposed design of several areas in the new building.
“Parents and families have helped shape the CHEO Integrated Treatment Centre into a place that will make a significant difference for children and youth in the coming years. From the building design to working on the integrated model of care, collaboration has been at the heart of each conversation and decision. I’m excited for this important milestone at CHEO and I can’t wait to see the vision become reality,” said Steve Herzog, Family Advisor, CHEO Integrated Treatment Centre.
Construction of the new site, which will be about 200,000 square feet, is a multi-year project funded by the Ontario government and CHEO, with support from generous donors through the CHEO Foundation. It will be built by EllisDon Infrastructure OCH Inc with completion expected in 2028.
