The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario – Children’s Treatment Centre (CHEO – OCTC) is proud to be named one of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures in the public sector – joining Ducks Unlimited Canada, Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, Egg Farmers of Canada, Energie NB Power, Ontario Trillium Foundation and Travel Alberta.
For the last two years, CHEO – OCTC has also been ranked No. 1 among health-care and social-sector employers by Forbes’ list of Canada’s Best Employers, moving into the overall Top 10 for 2017.
This is the second time that well-respected Waterstone Human Capital has named CHEO – OCTC as one of the Most Admired Corporate Cultures in Canada. The recognition means CHEO – OCTC is seen as an organizational leader in Canada at the forefront of best practices, with a corporate culture that gives its team an advantage and improves performance, according to Waterstone Human Capital.
“At Waterstone we believe corporate culture drives performance,” says Marty Parker, President and Chief Executive Officer of Waterstone Human Capital and Chair of Canada’s Most Admired™ Corporate Cultures. “What’s remarkable about the dynamic list of 2017 winners is their commitment to culture as a competitive advantage. They truly set the benchmark for cultivating, and sustaining, great cultures that ultimately drive their growth and performance. The 2017 winning organizations are to be admired for the diverse and impactful ways they make sure culture underpins all that makes them successful.”
President and CEO Alex Munter agrees, pointing out that CHEO – OCTC’s culture enables the creation and adoption of innovations that improve care for children and youth.
For example, last month CHEO – OCTC implemented one of its most transformational improvements ever by launching Epic — its digital health record system — in its inpatient units, Emergency Department, Pharmacy, Critical Care units and Medical Day Unit. The move delivers on a promise of one health record for each patient. It also allows for the use of automated workflows that improve patient safety, quality of care and experience, as well as making care more efficient and connected with the community, and expanding research capabilities.
CHEO – OCTC is now in the top three of Canada’s 1,400 hospitals when it comes to adopting digital health records, according to HIMSS Analytics.
CHEO – OCTC strives to create a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging and supporting innovation from throughout the organization, whether that’s a nurse, admin clerk, cleaning staff or physician. Last year, the organization’s 2,890 employees and physicians logged 1,800 improvements.
“What enables our culture here to flourish is that everyone is unified in a shared purpose to help children and youth lead their best lives,” says Munter. “It is what makes our work meaningful; it is the foundation for our many improvements; it is why we are leaders in adopting electronic health records; it means better care.”
For the past five years, CHEO – OCTC patient recommendation scores for inpatient and Emergency Department visits have consistently ranked 10 to 20 percentage points above the Canadian average.
