May 22, 2024, Ottawa, ON — CHEO has achieved the highest level possible in its accreditation process, earning exemplary status from Accreditation Canada, the independent agency that rates the quality and safety of Canadian health-care organizations. CHEO met 2,745 of the 2,760 standards against which it was assessed – a result of 99.5%. CHEO also achieved all 30 required organizational practices in areas like safety, medication management, infection control and communication.
“This accreditation confirms what we work so hard to do each day: provide safe and quality care to the kids and families who depend on us. Achieving such a high rating is a true badge of honour for our people and our organization,” said Alex Munter, President and CEO at CHEO.
Accreditation is required every four years. A team of external experts visits CHEO to assess clinical and organizational processes. CHEO received high praises from these surveyors for its successful navigation of COVID-19, new urgent care clinics, strong safety culture, as well as community and home care programs such as the Kids Come First initiative and 1Call1Click. Also highlighted were the integration of technology, impact of the research enterprise and engagement of patients and family in care.
“CHEO staff, medical staff, learners and volunteers have worked hard and shown a strong commitment to safety, quality, and excellence, which creates the best experience for children, youth, families and everyone who comes to CHEO,” adds Munter.
