Inspired by her experience working at a summer camp for children with cancer, Abby was touched by the stories of hope and healing that emerged from CHEO. After visiting CHEO’s Medical Day Unit with one of her campers, and seeing the nurses in action, Abby knew she wanted to be part of this great work. “It was at that moment I decided I not only wanted to work at CHEO, but I wanted to become a nurse,” says Abby.
Abby started her journey at CHEO as a Registered Nurse within the Mental Health department over a decade ago. Since then she’s felt incredible support from the team and has found her work to be both rewarding and lifechanging.
Abby’s commitment to her patients and her passion for pediatric care has continued to grow. With the desire to expand her skills, Abby went back to school and today she works as a Nurse Practitioner in CHEO’s Mental Health department. But this was about more just career advancement for Abby, it was about her commitment to providing the best possible care for her patients.
Fast forward a few years, and Abby got to experience CHEO from a completely new perspective. At just seven days old, Abby’s son was admitted to CHEO with a mysterious illness. Suddenly, Abby found herself in a situation she had witnessed countless times before, but this time, she was the patient’s parent. And it was through her son’s experience, and the care he received, that truly solidified her understanding of CHEO’s impact.
Over the course of two weeks, Abby witnessed firsthand the seamless care and support CHEO’s medical staff, and her colleagues, provided. Reflecting back, Abby shares, “I will never forget our early days at CHEO. I carry the lessons learned as a CHEO parent with me as I do my job every day, hoping I can give my patients the same feelings of compassion and hope.”
Thankfully, Abby’s son recovered fully, and is now a “rambunctious and thriving toddler.”
